Project Includes Survey, Documentation & Restoration Study of the St. Nicolaus Cathisma at Vatopedian St. Andrew’s Hermitage / Karyes / Mt. Athos .
St. Nicolaus Cathisma is an important example of the Athonian architectural/cultural heritage.
It’s a combination of Athonian Post Byzantine, traditional Greek & Balkan structural techniques.
Stone engraving dates the construction back to the 1866.

St.Nicolaus Cathisma is a three-storey building, consisting of a temple building, to which a second auxiliary building has been attached, with absolutely identical constructional technique.
Main Temple is located on the 3rd level and is dedicated to St. Nicolaus.
Intentions of the Restoration Study were:
i) Structural enforcement of the building
ii) Solve structural issues
iii) Aesthetic upgrading
iv) To enhance the historical & artistic value of the building
v) Rehabilitation of the Cathisma as a place of Worship
Most of the wooden structure was totally destroyed. All reconstruction proposals were based on evidence found in situ.
